Unit 2- Project expectations

Hello  all,

I will be talking to you soon, but I thought I would put this out now as so many students get confused with this.

Unit 2 is an experiment. You need to use the scientific method and write up a full analysis of this plan. You will use the Lab Report in the doc sharing for this report.

This is a true experiment and you are talking about your controls, hypothesis and review all parts of the lab report. You do not know the answers yet as you are just doing the experiment now.

Review the Week 1 directions and that is what you write about. The final part of the report will be done in a few weeks.

Look on the website for links for the chapter that I have found and I also have a lot of stuff on the scientific method. If I have time, I may do an audio lecture on how to do it. I will see about that today after seminar.

Take care and see you later!

Fondly,

Dr. Kathy

Here is what Unit 2 Project says to do this week:

(Week 1) Lab Assignment 1: Make several observations about the fresh coffee filter at the start of the experiment. Since there hasn't been any air pollution exposure yet, you can use this "untouched" filter as your control group. Make notes about what it looks like, including its color, sheen, texture, so that you'll have something to compare your results to. Be sure to note the date and the time in your observations. If you have a digital camera, please take a picture of the coffee filter now and save it for comparison later. You also should make a hypothesis at this stage about what you expect to see on your coffee filter at the end of four weeks. Save your observations and your hypothesis to be handed in four weeks from now. You'll turn in Lab Assignment 1 at the end of this unit.

Do all of this using the Lab Report Format.

Hello all,
After reviewing the assignment and the organization of the lab report- the checklist and format are in doc sharing. I have attached the component of the lab report using the checklist so it explains the lab report to you. I would like you to do the following format ONLY for this project

1. Title page
2. Introduction
3. Problem by problem. Number and write the problem so I know which one you are answering. 4. Discussion and Conclusions You probably will not have references on this one. In the future, you will need to use the lab report format that is on this attachment as well as in doc sharing.

There is a check list in the doc sharing all ready. This is very similar to APA and I would like the double spacing, correct Title page, 1 inch margins too. Make sure you answer all of the questions. Some questions may have more than one in them. Re-read them. Check your work. Do spell checks and then re-read. I am putting some info about scientific method on the website for you too so check that out.

I hope this helps! Fondly, Dr. Kathy

Here is a good link for the scientific method.

The Best way to Get an A on a Discussion Post

1. Read the question you are responding to.
  • a. Make sure you are answering all PARTS of the question

2. Do not use lower case i for I; spell correctly, no IM shortcuts. This is a post that is educational and shows that you are using academic, college level writing skills.

3. Advancing the discussion, like in a class they need to post something that allows other students to add to the discussion.

4. Use the following questions and guide to help you develop a post
  • Expand on the other post
  • Ask for more information
  • Act as devils advocate
  • No less than 50 words- guideline not to count each word
  • Add websites
  • Asking questions for critical thinking
  • Add spice to discussion board- correctly- just as a devils advocate
  • Move the topic along
  • Not moving the discussion forward rather than time factor

5. Use the following questions to help you think of a new response to a peer.
  • Is your message factually accurate?
  • Is your message original? If you copy or paraphrase another source, you must cite it.
  • Is your message relevant to the issue being discussed?
  • Have you taught us anything new? [This is very important!]
  • Does your message engage others to want to participate in additional discussion?
  • Is your message written in academically appropriate fashion? [With no "chat" lingo, no spelling errors, no grammatical errors.]
Hope this helps during the term. Come back and read it to ensure you are doing the best you can!!!

How to use Word Tracking Feature

Every paper you submit will have comments on it. These comments are done using the “Track Changes”

This page will have tools to help students in using technology in the course.

1. How to use Word 2007 (windows version) of Track Changes which is used in your course

1. To turn it on: View Changes and Make Changes
To view changes do the following:
  • Open Word
  • Go to "Tools" and then click on "Track Changes" (to make sure the feature is turned on)
  • Make sure to have all of the following checked under "Show": (on the Reviewing Toolbar)
  1. Comments
  2. Insertions
  3. Deletions
  4. Formatting
2. Then you will be able to see all tracked changes.
3. Your comments will be visible as well as your grade.

Other comments and where they are

Make sure that you review any comments I make in the Dropbox return. If you have a 0 you may have left out material that I need to have included. Read the comments in the Grade area and you will see once you click on the grade, the comments I have made. This will also have other comments too.

I have put some videos on this website to help you- bookmark it!!

I have found this really great website that will allow you to log on and study as a group or on your own. It is attached to my Facebook site but you need a password to get on. The password is "happy".
This website allows you to study at your own pace all the terms that you need to know for the test.
The test is hard and it is really important that you study and memorize. I have found this site and taken the terms you need so that you can study them.
Please use it!!! I will have every unit put in there by the end of the term.
Here is the link to unit 1.

Welcome and Video for you!!

This blog will have links, videos, YouTube videos, animations to help you with your course material. It has been used by other students and they found this to be very helpful. Please check the blog frequently.

Here is a video on Homeostasis.
